Running unopposed for Council – First Nations North
I am the Nurse Manager for Torres and Cape Hospital and Health (TCHHS) Virtual Care Services – based on Thursday Island.
I’ve been a strong advocate for nurses and community members for more than 20 years. As a recent example, I supported a graduate nurse to voice her concerns about the lack of cultural safety within the workplace. This was a contributing factor to the establishment of identified Clinical Facilitator positions throughout TCHHS.
By telling my story to the former Health Minister on how I was subjected to racial discrimination during a recruitment process along with my experience in the workplace, I helped the push for TCHHS to be investigated. From the investigation, 35 recommendations into improving the recruitment process were identified.
I’m currently working with the Far North Queensland First Nations branch for mob to be renumerated for cultural/colonial load and for cultural leave to be increased to 10 days under EB12. I’m also working collaboratively with other coalition unions for First Nation’s staff within TCHHS to have an individual psychosocial assessment conducted so that appropriate support systems for our mob are implemented.
It’s time for our mob to share our stories and through our stories we will see change.
Our QNMU Members United Team has a track record of success, a plan to keep nursing and midwifery strong, and we're asking for your vote.
