Lucynda Maskell

Candidate for Vice President

I am a strong voice for rural and remote Queensland members and have been honoured to serve as QNMU Vice President for the past 8 years.  I seek your vote so I can keep achieving for nurses and midwives across all sectors.

I am a passionate advocate and work as a Clinical Nurse Consultant in the Aboriginal community of Napranum where I have worked for over 19 years. I have attained extended scope in Rural and Isolated practice and Immunising. I care for people across the spectrum of life with a primary health focus. For this reason I feel affinity with members also working in primary care across Queensland.

I became active in our union in the 1990’s at Princess Alexandra Hospital. I worked for several wonderful years as a Brisbane-based Organiser before moving north and back into the clinical setting. I have remained active in my local Branch and consultative forums and as a QNMU Councillor since that time. I remain steadfast in my commitment to our union.

Our QNMU Members United Team has a track record of success, a plan to keep Nursing and Midwifery strong and we’re asking for your vote.

Support for Lucynda

“Having our QNMU vice president living and working in far North Queensland is empowering for all nurses who live and work in a remote or regional location.

We have a voice. We can be heard.

Lucynda understands the unique challenges and skills we need to thrive in remote locations. We are represented and understood and our unique needs and issues are communicated at the highest level of our union.

Lucynda’s enthusiasm for working remotely and for the QNMU is inspiring and she is a strong voice for all nurses living and working outside the major centres.”

— Tanya Sorrell, Mental Health Nurse, Cooktown

“Lucynda has dedicated her life to nursing!  She has proven her dedication through her long term role as a hands on nurse in Cape York for the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service.

Lucynda has been a nursing mentor for many new and junior nurses, including myself.  We have worked together in various roles, and I have seen first-hand how she advocates for her patients as well as her colleagues.

Lucynda is a passionate and experienced nurse, she is a dependable colleague who will continue to stand for safe patient and nursing environments.”

Jessica Stecko, Nurse Practitioner, Weipa

“Since meeting Lucynda I have been inspired to become more active in the QNMU. She has encouraged my development into a Cape York branch delegate and I enjoy being in the role.

Lucynda has my vote as Vice President. She is devoted, dedicated and I believe can make a difference to the success of our branch goals, and to the QNMU overall. Within our Branch, Lucynda’s courage and support has instilled confidence in many nurses to advocate for themselves and others.”

“First and foremost, I would like to acknowledge the work and support the Nurses and Midwives received from the Union throughout these hard times.

The support I have received from Lucynda Maskell has been unmeasurable to say the least. She encouraged me to become a Union Rep for the Weipa area which has been rewarding for both myself and fellow workmates. Being a union representative has made me more aware of work the union does and the importance of it. Lucynda is always there to answer any questions I have and to give support where she can. She is proactive in involving all nursing and midwife staff in union updates and relevant news. The current leadership have stood by their members through such challenging times and have been strong in doing so.”

Vicki Law, ENAS

“It has been my great pleasure to work closely with Lucynda over a few decades. I have seen first-hand her dedication, passion and commitment in a variety of settings.

My first encounter with Lucynda was as a dedicated workplace activist before she came to work for our union as an Organiser in our Brisbane office. When she decided follow her passion for remote area nursing in Cape York, she continued to demonstrate her commitment to our union by standing for election as a Councillor and later as Vice President, the position she holds today.

Lucynda is tenacious, calm and hard-working. She cares deeply and she is driven to ensure that the work of nurses and midwives is respected and they are trusted and supported to do their work to the best of their ability. She knows too well that this respect and trust must be demonstrated tangibly though the provision of fair pay and conditions along with the staffing and other resources required to enable them to provide high quality care.

Lucynda has campaigned tirelessly over many years to achieve the best possible outcomes for members across all settings.  In particular she is a passionate advocate for the unique needs of remote area communities and the nurses and midwives working there.

Given her tireless commitment to advancing fairness and addressing disadvantage I strongly recommend members vote for Lucynda so she can continue to deliver for members in her role as Vice President.”
